Ischia the name derives from the Latin word "insula" (island) which over the centuries has Italianate in Iscla and then Ischia. Previously the island of Ischia, however, had other names: during the Greek colonization period was called Pithekoussai, vessels town, for the large number of clay vessels factories that characterized it, while during the period of Roman rule the island was called Aenaria, metal cities, for the richness of metal deposits that characterize large parts of territory and that the Romans first began to exploit conspicuously.
The highest point of the island of Ischia is the summit of Mount Epomeo at an altitude of 789 meters above sea level, from quiet time volcano that makes Ischia volcanic island by the great activity Thermal. Today the main source of wealth for the local economy is precisely linked to spas: so many, in fact, are the spas that attract every year thousands of tourists from all over the world.
The volcanic nature of the island has also made the soil very fertile and particularly suitable for growing tomatoes, grapes, citrus fruits, are the pride of the island's agricultural production.
The island's coast as mentioned is very varied: the western and northern Europe have a low coast with a large presence of small beaches and natural harbors. The east coast and south, however, have a more rugged shape and characterized by cliffs overlooking the sea although actually good part of the southern side is occupied by the island's largest beach, the Maronti, which is still topped by a large ridge which isolates the inside of the coast.
A main road runs all around the island, linking the six municipalities; other smaller arteries, then, can reach all internal fractions making Ischia island easily accessible in almost all parts of its territory, even the most hidden and isolated.
The climate is temperate Mediterranean with moderate hike: the average annual temperature is 17 ° C with a minimum of 7 ° C in January-February and a high of 35 ° C in July-August.
The main business activities are related to tourism and therefore of a seasonal nature; Another important sector is the service sector mainly related to the school and office sector; quite practiced fishing and laborers work while still good today part of the territory is used for agriculture, practiced, however, more as a hobby than as the first activity.
The flagships of local production are the wines, bitters, ceramics, cosmetics and pastry products. A great tradition also the culinary arts associated especially with dishes rabbit and fish; famous are also the local cherry tomatoes that due to the volcanic area take on a unique flavor and find their exaltation in simple dishes such as bruschetta and salads.

Ischia is an island of beautiful and intriguing day and night.
